September is the Month of Modern! Have you heard? Boulder is home to a fabulous cultural community event that celebrates all things modern, but especially our local architectural heritage. We’re passionate Sponsors of this cool and somewhat under-the radar adventure. It’s open to the public so come on in – the water’s fine! No, literally, the pool is warm and that’s where the party started... This year, MOM is hosting an exciting design competition to re-envision the Elks Lodge in North Boulder. The hidden-in-plain-sight, 30,000 sf. bunker-like building sits on 10 scruffy acres. 60 years ago it boasted 4,500 members. Like many of its fellow social clubs (Moose, Rotary, Lions, Odd-Fellows, etc.) its peak is long-past, and the building has faded along with its membership. But the Elks decided to open their fun and funky “Welcome back to the ‘70’s” outdoor pool to the public a few years ago, and it has sparked a renewed interest and awareness from the community. Now this competition seeks to showcase inspired designs to re-invent and renew the Elks and bring it back into the center of the Boulder community.
